Ventura County alt/indie rock band Strange Case continue their rise within Southern California’s emerging wave of guitar-driven music with the release of their brand-new music video for their single, “Sugar.”
Following the momentum generated by their previous single “HBK,” the band’s latest track showcases a different side of Strange Case’s songwriting prowess, pairing emotionally honest lyrics with the sun-soaked guitar tones and melodic hooks that have become part of their signature California sound.
Written by frontman Mikey Netka, “Sugar” explores the emotional uncertainty that often comes with young relationships. While the title may suggest a traditional love song, the track digs deeper into the complicated feelings that can come with navigating romance for the first time.
“This song came from experiences in early relationships,” says Netka. “When you enter a love affair for the first time, it can be difficult to navigate the rush of new emotions that come with it. I think a lot of people can relate to secretly hoping the other person will end things first so they don’t have to be the one to cause the hurt.”
The track was recorded at Harbor Martyr Studios in San Pedro, California with producer Jon Joseph (Sublime), who previously worked with the band on their single “HBK.” The recording captures the band’s raw chemistry, blending surf-inspired guitar textures with songwriting influences drawn from classic folk artists like Bob Dylan and Jim Croce, while still appealing to fans of modern acts such as Ocean Alley and Cage The Elephant.
Strange Case features Mikey Netka (vocals), Zane Vandevort (guitar), Aaron Chapman (bass), and Jackson Morris (drums). The band continues to build momentum as one of the most promising young acts emerging from the Southern California indie scene.
With new music arriving steadily, Strange Case are also preparing for the next phase of their career with a full-length album expected this summer, along with plans for a Los Angeles album release show.
