Surfer Girl’s latest single, “Slow Motion,” takes center stage this weekend as The Pier Song of the Week on Skratch N’ Sniff’s Alternative Mix #709.
Led by Carter Reeves Schultz, formerly of the Boston hip-hop and alternative duo Aer, the Los Angeles-based band has developed a sound that moves freely between indie pop, reggae-rock and laid-back alternative music. “Slow Motion” captures that balance through an easygoing groove, warm instrumentation and a chorus built around stepping away from the noise of everyday life.
The song carries the relaxed energy that has become central to Surfer Girl’s identity, but it also reflects the melodic growth heard across the band’s recent releases. Rather than rushing toward a dramatic payoff, “Slow Motion” settles into its pocket and stays there, turning the track’s title into a guiding philosophy.
“Slow Motion” is one of the previews from Surfer Girl’s upcoming album, Midnight, arriving August 21 through Ineffable Records. The album follows the band’s 2025 release, Sunset, which included collaborations with Collie Buddz, Bryce Vine, Bobby Alu and other artists from across the reggae, pop and alternative worlds.
The upcoming record continues the time-of-day theme that has connected Surfer Girl’s catalogue, while opening another chapter for a band whose audience has continued to expand beyond the modern reggae scene. The new music also follows the group’s 15-date headlining Skydiving Tour.
Listeners can hear “Slow Motion” during Segment 4 of this weekend’s Alternative Mix, surrounded by a wide-ranging collection of remixes, emerging artists and established alternative favorites.
Alternative Mix #709 begins with Fairlane’s remix of Imagine Dragons’ “Believer,” followed by Lumix’s take on Beach Weather’s “Sex, Drugs, Etc.” The opening segment also features In Color’s “High,” Colony House’s remix of Little Image’s “Out Of My Mind” and Bad Press’ “Circle Round.”
Elsewhere in the show, Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream,” No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak,” Muse’s “Starlight,” Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” and M83’s “Midnight City” receive fresh electronic treatments. The remix-heavy selections are balanced by new and recent music from The Haunted Youth, honestav with mgk, Death Cab for Cutie, Bob Moses, Ecca Vandal, Jesse James Pariah and Cage the Elephant.
The Pier community is also represented by Slightly Stoopid and G. Love’s “Back Seat Drivin’,” which appears during Segment 3. The collaboration brings a dose of reggae-rock swagger to a segment that also includes Muse, Glass Animals, The Maine and Death Cab for Cutie.
“Slow Motion” arrives in Segment 4 alongside Dominic Fike’s “Babydoll,” Tame Impala’s “Breathe Deeper,” Jesse James Pariah’s “Pariah” and a remix of Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks.” It is a fitting position for a song that connects the show’s indie, pop and reggae influences.
Skratch N’ Sniff begins the weekend with its Friday Fix Mix, a nearly 15-minute continuous mix designed to provide a quick burst of the show’s signature genre-blending energy before the full Alternative and Rock programs begin airing.
Rock Mix #1225 brings the heavier side of the weekend with music from Metallica, Breaking Benjamin, Evanescence, Marilyn Manson, Papa Roach featuring Hanumankind, Architects, Black Sabbath, Deftones, Disturbed, Rage Against the Machine and The HU featuring Jonny Hawkins of Nothing More.
