The California Honeydrops have returned with “Song Of You,” a warm, understated love song that arrives just as the Oakland roots-and-soul favorites prepare to head back out for another substantial run of shows.
Released September 11 through Tubtone Records, “Song Of You” leans into the softer side of the Honeydrops’ sound. The 2:49 track was written by frontman Antoni Lech Wierzynski and carries the relaxed romantic character that has long existed alongside the band’s more explosive soul, R&B, funk and blues material.
The California Honeydrops released Redwood Highway on August 8, 2025, an eight-song record built around a stripped-back, acoustic approach. The album included “Redwood Highway,” “Hold On,” “Shine Delight,” “Nothin But A Man,” “Wind Howling,” “Only Home,” “Feets” and “Do It Like That.”
Since then, the band has continued releasing music rather than immediately moving into another album cycle. Their post-Redwood Highway output has included “I’m In Love (with Jimmy James),” “Lovin’ Made Easy,” “365 Flavors” and the Dirtwire reworking of “Lovin’ Made Easy,” among other releases. “Song Of You” now gives that run a decidedly romantic entry.
It is also another reminder of how broad the Honeydrops’ musical vocabulary has become. The group emerged from Oakland’s subway stations before growing into an internationally touring band whose music pulls freely from vintage R&B, Southern soul, New Orleans traditions, blues, funk, gospel and jazz.
After wrapping their recent Wild & Free run, The California Honeydrops launch the next leg of their 2026 schedule in the Southwest on September 25 with a benefit concert at Taos Mesa Brewing’s Mothership in New Mexico. One night later, they are scheduled to headline Saturday at Smalltown Gathering in Salida, Colorado, before the Sweet Like That Tour moves through Colorado, the Midwest, East Coast and Southeast. Blues guitarist and singer Jontavious Willis will support the band on select dates.
The first Sweet Like That stretch runs through October 11 at Tipitina’s in New Orleans, with stops including Boulder Theater, the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., The Orange Peel in Asheville and The Windjammer in Isle of Palms.
The band then heads west in November for another run beginning at Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown. That leg travels through California, Oregon and Washington, including Ventura Music Hall, San Luis Obispo’s Fremont Theater, The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, the Historic Ashland Armory and Spokane’s Knitting Factory.
The Honeydrops already have plans extending into 2027 as well. They will return home to the Bay Area for three consecutive “San Francisco 2027 With Family & Friends” shows at The Fillmore from January 28 through January 30.
