Burnt’s “Blackberry” Background:

Burnt is a working-class band. They all have day jobs as they group has primarily spent the last 5+ years working full-time for the restoration and conservation of natural areas around the Bay Area. This is all relevant to the inspiration of the song “Blackberry.”

Vocalist Danny Franco tells The Pier: “A lot of the backbreaking work of biodiversity conservation is carried out by migrant workers. Yes, the same workforce from Mexico and Central-America that come to the US seeking opportunity and a better life for themselves and for their children. They pick our produce and tar our roofs, roads and are often doing the hard but righteous work of invasive plant removal and habitat improvements for endangered species… Imagine trying to claw and climb your way through a 10 foot high thicket of poison oak, woody bushes, and California blackberry bramble to find one tiny invasive plant that can colonize and change an entire ecosystem!”

While Danny was working with this crew, he noticed their leader, Loco, struggling to remove a blackberry thorn from his hand. The question of something so small hurting so bad became the catalyst to the inspiration for the song. “I knew immediately there was a song there,” Danny continues. “A parable about the power we have as mere individuals to be a thorn in the side of the unjust power structure currently gripping the world. When I got home from work, I put the lyrics over a simple 4 chord pattern and came up with a simple vocal melody.”

Tom Cook of The Debonaires is featured on the track with his contribution of the upright piano being performed on the downbeat of the track, giving it an old-time ska/rocksteady sound. You can purchase Burnt’s new album, Majestic Walrus, on iTunes by clicking HERE!
