Nick Hexum has released Waning Time, the third and final EP in his trilogy of solo releases.
The project – which includes previous EPs Waxing Nostaglic (released in February) and Full Memories (released in April) – has seen the 311 frontman moving out of his comfort zone into a more acoustic, country-tinged sound. The material is also introspective, with Waning Time offering some of the most personal songs of Hexum’s career. Notably, the song “I Am Open” (which you can hear below) sees Hexum addressing the death of his younger brother, Patrick, who died due to opioid addiction.
“I didn’t know how to talk about losing my brother, so I wrote a song instead,” Hexum explained on social media. “Waning Time is the third EP in this acoustic series I’ve been making on the side, quieter, more personal. The song ‘I Am Open’ is me trying not to hold it all in anymore. There’s also a Billie Holiday cover in there that helped me reconnect with something soft. Thanks for giving it a moment.”
In a separate conversation with The Pier, Hexum explained what drew him towards this new sound.
“From mandolin to banjo, these are things that have existed way longer than the electric guitar,” the singer noted. “So there’s just a timelessness about it that is just very appealing. And so it’s exciting to go into a new sound. And it just kind of came from following – you know, you gotta follow the muse. The muse will lead you places and you If you don’t follow the muse she will forsake you.”
Waning Time is available on all streaming platforms now.
