Surfer Girl have joined forces with Wiz Khalifa for “Smoked Out,” the final single ahead of the band’s forthcoming album, Midnight.
Released through Ineffable Records, the collaboration brings Surfer Girl’s coastal mixture of indie-pop, reggae, dub, beach rock and hip-hop into direct conversation with one of rap’s most recognizable voices. The result places the band’s relaxed melodic identity alongside Wiz Khalifa’s unhurried delivery, creating a natural crossover between alternative reggae and contemporary hip-hop.
“Smoked Out” arrives shortly before Midnight, which is scheduled for release August 21. The 15-song album will include collaborations with Jack Pavlina, Dylan Cotrone and Wiz Khalifa, reflecting Surfer Girl’s continued interest in expanding its sound through artists from different corners of pop, alternative music and hip-hop.
The single also fits comfortably within the identity Carter Reeves has built around Surfer Girl. Reeves first became known as a member of the Massachusetts hip-hop and pop duo Aer before launching Surfer Girl as a new vehicle for his songwriting. The project is now based in Los Angeles and blends pop melody with dub atmosphere, reggae rhythm, beach-rock guitars and lingering elements of Reeves’ hip-hop background.
That history makes Wiz Khalifa a particularly fitting collaborator. “Smoked Out” does not require Surfer Girl to abandon its established character in pursuit of a rap feature. Hip-hop has remained part of the project’s foundation, even as the music has moved further into indie-pop, reggae and surf-rock territory.
The release closes a rollout that has shown several sides of Midnight. Surfer Girl began the album cycle with “Chestnut Hill,” followed by “Lose Touch,” “Slow Motion,” “Wear It Out” and “Eavesdrop.” Together, those singles have moved between reflective songwriting, polished alternative pop, reggae-influenced rhythm and the bright melodic instincts that have remained central to the project.
The title Midnight also extends the time-of-day sequence running through Surfer Girl’s catalog. The project previously released Sunrise in 2022, Noon and its deluxe edition, and Sunset in 2025. Rather than repeating the exact approach of those records, Midnight appears positioned as the after-dark chapter of the series, opening space for songs with a more nocturnal atmosphere while preserving the project’s coastal identity.
“Smoked Out” captures that transition clearly. Its concept is relaxed and social, but the track also represents the broader path of the album. Surfer Girl are increasingly comfortable moving between scenes that are often treated as separate, connecting reggae-rock audiences, alternative-pop listeners and hip-hop collaborators without forcing those influences into rigid categories.
Surfer Girl are also carrying the new material onto the road. The band’s current schedule includes dates in Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, California and additional markets later in the year.
