There are only so many weekends left before summer starts giving way to fall, and Beach Fly and Shwayze have provided a pretty convincing argument for ignoring the calendar.
Their collaboration “Summer Love” is ThePier.org Song of the Week for the weekend of August 22, earning a featured spot on Skratch N Sniff Alternative Mix #712 alongside almost monday, Slightly Stoopid, G. Love, Royal Blood, Young the Giant and more.
Released earlier this summer through Ineffable Records, “Summer Love” is Beach Fly’s first standalone release following the February arrival of the project’s debut album Flying.
It also feels like a logical continuation of what Beach Fly established on that record.
Flying never tried to keep itself inside a particularly strict version of reggae. Across 13 tracks, Beach Fly brought melodic pop songwriting together with acoustic textures, reggae rhythms and collaborations from several corners of The Pier world. Claire Wright joined “Thinking Of You,” The Expendables appeared on “Feel it So,” Surfer Girl contributed to “Tall Grass,” and Tropidelic came aboard for “Make it Work.”
Adding Shwayze to that list makes almost too much sense.
Long before the current wave of reggae-rock and alternative crossover records became commonplace, Shwayze was building songs around a similar collision of hip-hop, pop and coastal Southern California atmosphere. His 2008 breakthrough “Buzzin’” and “Corona and Lime” made that sound nationally recognizable, but his more recent catalog has brought him increasingly close to The Pier community through collaborations with artists including Common Kings, Dirty Heads, Pepper, Slightly Stoopid and Surfer Girl.
On “Summer Love,” the pairing is refreshingly uncomplicated. This is not a collaboration designed to show how many genres can fit into three and a half minutes. Beach Fly gives the track room to breathe, Shwayze settles naturally into the pocket, and both lean into the warm-weather character already built into their respective catalogs.
The artists also spent time together on the road this year. Beach Fly supported Shwayze on dates from his 7 Day Weekend Tour in June before continuing into shows with Passafire and Tropidelic.
That makes the single feel less like an isolated feature and more like another part of Beach Fly’s rapid integration into a scene the project has only formally been releasing music within for a few years.
This weekend, “Summer Love” moves into another part of that ecosystem as The Pier Song of the Week.
Inside Skratch N Sniff Alternative Mix #712
Beach Fly and Shwayze arrive in Segment 5, but the road to this week’s Song of the Week covers plenty of ground.
The show starts with De Soffer’s remix of Arctic Monkeys’ “R U Mine,” followed by a Soy Sauce rework of Twenty One Pilots’ “Tear In My Heart.” Royal Blood’s “Ten Over Ten” then brings the mix sharply back toward rock before Gin And Sonic’s Hozier remix and Strange Case’s “Waiting For The Weekend” finish Segment 1.
Royal Blood’s inclusion is especially timely. “Ten Over Ten” arrived in August as one of the duo’s first major pieces of new music in their latest chapter, carrying the enormous bass-driven sound that made the group stand out in the first place.
Segment 2 pairs another set of remixes with two records that have had a significant 2026.
Young the Giant’s “Evergreen” comes from Victory Garden, the Southern California band’s sixth album and Fearless Records debut, released May 1. Produced by Brendan O’Brien, the album found the group returning to a collaborative approach built around writing and recording together in the room.
Later in the same segment, Ecca Vandal’s “Cruising To Self Soothe” brings one of the Australian artist’s biggest recent songs into the show. The track became a major part of Vandal’s resurgence, eventually feeding into her 2026 album Looking for People to Unfollow.
Beach Weather, Dead Poet Society, Julia Wolf, The Neighbourhood and Bad Press take over Segment 3 before the show makes room for a full almost monday feature.
almost monday Get the Mini Mix Treatment
Segment 4 belongs largely to almost monday, who arrive on Alternative Mix #712 just weeks before the release of their second album.
The Mini Mix pulls together “can’t slow down,” “live forever,” “no more regrets” and “broken people,” with Young the Giant’s longtime anthem “My Body” worked into the middle.
For anyone who has followed almost monday from the beginning, the sequence gives a compact look at how quickly the San Diego trio has grown.
“live forever” reaches back to the band’s early years, while “broken people” helped introduce their sound in 2020. “can’t slow down” became the group’s first No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart following the release of their debut album DIVE.
Now the group is preparing for album number two.
THANK GOD IT’S ALMOST MONDAY arrives September 9 through Hollywood Records. Almost monday have already introduced the album through a run of singles including “no more regrets,” “skinny dip,” “delicate” and “better late than never,” and will follow the release with a North American headline tour beginning later in September.
That makes the Mini Mix both a look backward and a preview of a band preparing for another major step forward.
Beach Fly Takes the Spotlight
Segment 5 opens with OMNOM’s remix of Tame Impala’s “Let It Happen,” setting up Beach Fly and Shwayze directly afterward.
“Summer Love” then gets its turn as ThePier.org Song of the Week, sitting at a particularly fitting intersection in the playlist. On one side is the electronic remix culture that has always been central to Skratch N Sniff. On the other are Steve Lacy, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and honestav with mgk.
The show closes by reaching back through alternative history with Beck, Social Distortion, Foo Fighters and Weezer before Slightly Stoopid and G. Love’s “Back Seat Drivin’” bring the final segment home.
Taken as a whole, Alternative Mix #712 captures what makes the partnership between The Pier and Skratch N Sniff work. Neither platform treats reggae, alternative rock, hip-hop or electronic music as sealed-off worlds. Beach Fly and Shwayze are a particularly good example of why.
“Summer Love” can live comfortably on a reggae playlist. It can sit alongside hip-hop. And this weekend, it sounds equally at home wedged between Tame Impala and Steve Lacy.
That is exactly where The Pier Song of the Week should be.
