Ripe have released “Caralee (Brooklyn Paramount),” the third and final preview of the Boston-formed band’s forthcoming live album, Brooklyn Paramount. The full collection arrives July 31 through Ineffable Records.
“Caralee” reaches further back into Ripe’s history than the live album’s other advance singles. The original studio recording appeared on the band’s 2015 EP, Hey Hello, making the song a connection between Ripe’s formative period and the larger concert production documented at the Brooklyn Paramount.
That history gives the new version a purpose beyond simply reproducing a familiar track onstage. Songs written early in a band’s career often change as the group’s audience, arrangements, performance instincts and musicianship evolve. By including “Caralee” in the rollout, Ripe demonstrate how material from their first several years can function within the more expansive live identity they have developed since.
The single follows “Goon Squad,” featuring Allen Stone, and a live recording of “First Time Feeling.” Together, the three previews show different sides of the forthcoming album. “Goon Squad” emphasizes collaboration and spectacle, “First Time Feeling” captures the momentum of Ripe’s more recent catalog and “Caralee” brings the project back to the band’s beginnings.
Live albums can easily become secondary catalog releases, but Brooklyn Paramount is being presented as a central document of Ripe’s current era. The Brooklyn venue gives the band a setting large enough to capture the communal energy that has long been central to its reputation. At the same time, a song such as “Caralee” keeps the performance connected to the smaller rooms and early releases that helped create that audience.
Ripe’s music has always drawn energy from the intersection of pop songwriting, funk-oriented rhythm and the improvisational flexibility of a touring band. The live setting makes those elements easier to understand as parts of the same approach. Hooks provide an entry point, while the arrangements leave room for the musicians and audience to shape the performance together.
The release arrives ahead of another stretch of summer touring. Ripe’s announced dates include the Eagle River Jamboree in Colorado on August 8, the Lowell Summer Music Series in Massachusetts on August 9 and an August 11 appearance at The Chicken Box on Nantucket, followed by additional headline and festival performances.
