For Dustin “Duddy B” Bushnell, Dirty Heads have always been something of a family affair. But on the band’s latest album, 7 Seas, that idea becomes literal.
“2 Young,” one of the record’s most personal moments, finds Duddy sharing the microphone with his 18-year-old daughter, Sophia Lynn, an emerging singer-songwriter who is beginning to carve out a musical identity of her own. Released as part of Dirty Heads’ ninth full-length album, the track marks the first time father and daughter have appeared together on a Dirty Heads record.
The collaboration, however, wasn’t planned.
“Honestly, I think I was looking for an old pirate-themed sample for a new intro to our live set,” Duddy tells ThePier.org. “I was digging through old sample libraries that were literally pirate-themed, and I came across this weird old sample. It had that melody from ‘Too Young.’ It sounded kind of creepy and eerie.”
Duddy brought the discovery to bandmate Jared Watson and producer Ryan. Almost immediately, the strange sample stopped sounding like an intro and started sounding like the foundation of a song.
“I said, ‘Listen to this. This is really cool,’” Duddy recalls. “Ryan, the producer we were working with, and Jared were both in the room. Right when I played it, they both said, ‘Oh man, this is crazy. We should actually make a song around this.’”
As the track began taking shape, Duddy realized there was one voice it needed.
“As soon as we started building it, I thought, ‘My daughter needs to sing this. Her voice would be absolutely perfect on this song.’”
There wasn’t much trial and error once Sophia entered the studio.
“We brought her into the studio, and she’s insane,” Duddy says. “She sang it twice. That was it. It was perfect.”
That moment carries considerably more weight when placed against Dirty Heads’ history. Sophia was still a baby when Duddy, Jared Watson, and Rome Ramirez were kicking around the song that became “Lay Me Down” in Duddy’s backyard. Duddy has recalled Sophia sitting in a high chair during those sessions; more than a decade later, she is no longer watching her father’s career unfold from the sidelines. She’s singing alongside him.
And “2 Young” isn’t simply a cameo from a musician’s daughter.
Sophia launched her own recording career this year with debut single “Bittersweet,” an atmospheric alternative-pop track written during her senior year of high school. Produced by longtime Dirty Heads collaborator Rome Ramirez, the song explores the uneasy transition between adolescence and adulthood, establishing Sophia as an artist with ambitions beyond her family connection.
Duddy says those ambitions became obvious years ago.
“She gets home from wherever she’s been—school or work—and goes straight to her room with an acoustic guitar,” he says. “For the next five hours, all you hear is her playing guitar and singing.”
“That started about five or six years ago, and that’s when we really noticed it. We thought, ‘Damn, she really loves this.’”
Then came the songs.
“Then she started showing us the songs she was writing, and it became very obvious that she had something really special,” Duddy says. “So we just keep feeding it.”
For a father who has spent more than two decades navigating an unpredictable music industry, watching his daughter enter that same world brings another responsibility. Asked how he balances encouraging Sophia while protecting her from the industry’s rougher edges, Duddy’s answer was simple.
“It makes me glad that she gets to navigate all of this with a solid team around her and people who have been there and done that,” he says. “And you better believe I’m going to be there.”
With “Bittersweet,” Sophia Lynn introduced herself on her own terms. With “2 Young,” father and daughter meet somewhere in the middle—two generations of the same musical family captured on the same record.
For Duddy, hearing that voice alongside his own made the result particularly special.
“It really worked out,” he says, “and she sounds amazing.”
